Got em Got em Need em

I don't remember the movie very well, but I sure do remember the fuckin' nightmares it gave me as a kid! Seriously. How can THIS be part of a kids' movie. Best part of the movie too. Surprised that the monster was Howie Mandel. That man still gives me nightmares. Except for Bobby's World. That was cool.

Movies

I've watched a bunch of movies recently. I haven't watched this many movies so frequently since my college days: tons of time + tons of bandwidth. Plus, since I've networked my Xbox360 to my NAS and signed up for a netflix instant streaming trial account; the ease of attaining entertainment has facilitated my recent binge. In no particular order, here's some stuff I've watched:

Ip-Man (2008)
Fucking awesome kung-fu movie starring Donnie Yen as the master of Bruce Lee and the first to openly teach Wing Chun. The movie chronicles his fictionalized life during the time of the Japanese Occupation of China. My brother's mom-in-law told us stories about how horrible the Japanese were to her relatives in Hong Kong and how her uncle/relative had a gun pointed at his face for just trying to get medicine for her mom.
Score: 9.5

Starship Troopers 3 (2008)
I just finished reading Heinlein's famous science-fiction novel Starship Troopers and I enjoyed the first movie so I was interested in this new release. Starship Troopers 2 strays far from the original story so I didn't even bother. This movie was more like a B-movie, complete with sub-par special effects and horrible acting. There wasn't even the expected nudity that comes with B-movies. There were bugs, guts, gore, mechs, and some throwbacks to the original novel; so it wasn't all bad.
Score: 4.8

Gran Torino (2008)
Much has already been said about this film on the interwebs so I'll save it. Crotchety old Clint Eastwood roughs up neighborhood punks while developing a friendship with his Hmong neighbors. The acting wasn't great because all the Hmongs were first-time actors, and a lot of the scenes just felt a little 'off' either from the dialog or the delivery, but still a very enjoyable film overall.
Score: 8.0

The Boondock Saints (1999)
I remember watching this film in college and liking it a lot; I didn't remember much of it so I watched it again since it was available on netflix. Entertaining film overall- it held up; but with a little more polish it could have been great. What I found more interesting was the background to the production of the film and the downfall of the director.
Score: 8.5

The Rocker (2008)
Dwight Schrute stars in a comedy about a washed up rocker teaching a pop emo band how to rock. It got a few chuckles out of me.
Score: 4.0

Ping Pong Playa (2008)
Heartwarming comedy about a chigga who teaches kids ping pong and comes to term with his own limitations. Funny film; ping-pong scenes aren't that good and there aren't many of them, but the dialog and characters is what really carries it.
Score: 8.3

Burn After Reading (2008)
Not my cup of tea. I enjoyed it, but I hardly laughed. It's funny in spots, but not ha-ha funny. Black comedy or something...still sucks.
Score: 3.0

Ghost Town (2008)
Brilliant. Ricky Gervais is hilarious in this. Must see.
Score: 9.4
